The Upper School physical education curriculum emphasizes a diverse offering of fitness, lifetime, and team sport activities. By promoting healthy lifestyles through planned, regular exercise, students obtain the skills and knowledge to continue their physical activity in the years ahead.

The goal of health and wellness instruction at Cary Academy is to promote health and wellness literacy. Using traditional classroom resources as well as the Internet and appropriate software, each student develops the ability to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services. The program provides the necessary foundation to enable students to make sound decisions regarding their physical and emotional well-being.

Using all equipment available in the weight room students will have an opportunity to improve general endurance of the respiratory and circulatory system, reducing or maintaining body fat levels, and understanding how to calculate maximum and target heart rates. In addition, focus will be placed on building muscle strength, core strength, and foot agility using correct body posture and safe workout principles. This class is graded Pass/Fail. In a classroom setting and hands on learning we will go into the anatomy and biomechanics of injuries and how to rehabilitate them. We will also cover other topics including modalities, taping, and emergency care. This class will also have open discussion about different healthcare careers and what the requirements are for each career. One 0.25 Fall 11,12

This class also requires 20 afterschool shadowing hours to assist the athletic trainers in practices and games. This class and the afterschool hours will build upon the knowledge learned in the Sports Medicine class with the addition of real hands-on experiences. One 0.25 Spring 11,12

Students will use social media as a tool to promote games, produce highlight films and slide shows, and create news features. Additionally, daily game day operations will be covered which may include prepping venues for contests, introducing starting lineups, broadcasting and more. This class is designed for both athletes and non-athletes who simply enjoy sports and want to become a part of putting together quality sporting events. The class will be project based with much of the class time spent working “in the field.” Some after school time may be required to help with the running of specific athletic events.
